What is the 1992 Disability Discrimination Act 1992, Australia (DDA)
The Australian Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) was introduced to ensure people with a disability have equitable and cost effective access to buildings, and services within buildings.
The DDA also provides building certifiers, developers, and building managers certainty, that if access to buildings is adhered to in accordance with DDA standards, then the provision of that access will be within the law under the Act.
The Act identifies the building developer as the decision maker who is responsible for the control of the building design and construction. The Building Developer can be described as one of the following roles; the Builder, Property Developer, property owner, building designer (Draftsperson or Architect) or Project Manager.
What height should DDA door handles be?
DDA door handles must be between 900mm and 1100mm from the door base, with the preferred height of 1000mm.
What makes a DDA compliant door handle?
A DDA door handle design should include 72mm from the handle to the keyway. The door handle that returns towards the door surface, to avoid catching the end of the door handle, also making the door handle easier to hold and function.
